Have you been diagnosed with uterine cancer?

Did you previously have fibroid removal or a hysterectomy in which a power morecellation device was used?

Power morcellators are instruments used by gynecologists to perform such procedures as a hysterectomy or myomectomy, the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus. These tiny devices, also called electric morcellators, perform most of the cutting involved in laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. The morcellators use rotating blades to break fibroids and other tissue masses into small fragments, which are then vacuumed away and out of the body.

Rather than make large cuts through the patient’s core stomach muscles, surgeons are able to use this morcellators to make incisions of less than two centimeters. Smaller incisions mean faster patient recovery, less post-operative pain and fewer wound complications.
However, recent medical evidence shows that the removal of broken-up fibroids and tissues may not be 100 percent effective. If any of the tissues containing cancer cells are not fully removed, they can spread to other areas, leading to the development of cancerous tumors.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that power morcellators may be responsible for seeding cancer in women who have had hysterectomies or uterine fibroids removed. In a recent Safety Communication, the FDA warns against using laparoscopic power morcellators for the majority of women undergoing hysterectomy or myomectomy because they “pose a risk of spreading unsuspected cancerous tissue, notably uterine sarcomas, beyond the uterus.”
