The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that power morcellators may be responsible for seeding cancer in women who have had hysterectomies or uterine fibroids removed. In a recent Safety Communication, the FDA warns against using laparoscopic power morcellators for the majority of women undergoing hysterectomy or myomectomy because they “pose a risk of spreading unsuspected cancerous tissue, notably uterine sarcomas, beyond the uterus.”
