Talcum Powder Litigation

Talcum Powder Lawsuit Ohio

Women around the country are becoming increasingly alarmed over the link between talcum powder in products such as Johnson & Johnson’s Johnson’s® Baby Powder and Shower to Shower® baby powder and ovarian cancer.
Talc is a mined mineral comprised primarily of magnesium, oxygen and silicon. Talcum powder is used in many consumer products, including body and facial powders, and even cosmetics. As a baby powder, it is used mainly to absorb moisture and to help prevent rashes. Yet when used on or near the genitals, talc particles can travel into the ovaries and remain there for years, causing inflammation and leading to the growth of cancer cells.
J&J currently faces more than 1,200 lawsuits alleging that the company failed to warn women and their families about the dangers of talcum powder and as a result, its products have led to ovarian cancer.
In February 2016, a Missouri jury ordered J&J to pay $10 million for compensatory damages and $62 million for punitive damages to the family of an Alabama woman who died in 2015 of ovarian cancer allegedly caused by years of using the company’s talc-based products.
Studies focusing on the causal link between talcum powder usage and ovarian cancer date back to the early 1970s, when such studies revealed that ovarian cancer patients showed particles of talc in their ovarian tissue.
Yet despite such scientific evidence – and growing concern by cancer prevention organizations, healthcare providers, and medical researchers – J&J continues to use talcum powder in its products. Talcum powder product labels warn against inhalation; but they do not warn about the dangers of external use.
