Ohio disability lawyers assisting with claims

Most of us work hard to earn an income, never expecting that a disability might someday render us unable to work. Yet, a 20-year-old worker has a three-in-ten chance of becoming disabled before reaching full retirement age. With those odds, it’s important to know that there are disability benefits you can rely on if you or a loved one should become disabled.
At NRS Injury Law, our disability attorneys help clients nationwide apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and deal with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Our attorneys provide guidance throughout the claims process to ensure that your application is complete and contains enough supporting medical and work-related documentation. If your claim is denied for any reason, a trusted disability attorney at NRS can also represent you in the appeals process.

What is Social Security disability?

A disability lawyer helps disabled workers who worked for a long enough time and paid Social Security taxes to obtain SSDI benefits. To qualify for SSDI, you must suffer from a total disability that is expected to last for at least one year, which makes you unable to do the work you did before and unable to adjust to other work, or results in death. SSDI is not available for short-term or partial disabilities.
Once your application is approved by the local disability office of the SSA, you should receive your first benefit six months after your disability began. The amount you receive is based on your lifetime average earnings that were covered by Social Security. A Social Security disability attorney may also be able to help qualifying members of your family obtain benefits, including your spouse or divorced spouse, children, disabled children or adult children disabled before age 22.

Social Security disability claims appeals

It is very common for claims to be denied at the initial levels, but your claim may be granted if appeals are carried forward. Ohio disability lawyers at NRS can guide you through each step of the following appeals process:
  • Reconsideration of your claim by a different SSA claims examiner
  • Hearing by an administrative law judge
  • Appeals Council review
  • Federal court review
