Was your child born with birth defects after taking Zofran (ondansetron)?

Zofran Birth Defects

Zofran, also known by its generic name, ondansetron, is a prescription medication for nausea and vomiting. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) never approved Zofran for use by pregnant women. According to the FDA and recent studies, taking Zofran while pregnant can lead to serious birth defects.
Court documents reveal that drug maker GlaxoSmithKline knew as early as 1992 that Zofran presented “unreasonable risk of harm” to developing babies. In 2012, Glaxo pleaded guilty to federal charges of fraud and illegal promotion of several drugs, including Zofran. Glaxo paid $3 billion as part of the legal settlement.
Despite these potential risks, Zofran continues to be prescribed “off-label” to pregnant women. Moreover, because women often experience morning sickness during the first trimester of pregnancy, women take Zofran during the most critical fetal development period.
Common types of birth defects that potentially come from Zofran include:
  • Cleft palate
  • Cleft lip
  • Club foot
  • Physical deformities
  • Heart defects (e.g. murmurs, septal defects, holes in the heart)
